Sex and the Marathon: Why runners make better lovers

Posted on Feb 6, 2011 in Running, Sports, Writer Bunny

In light of valentine’s day and entertainment on today’s long run, Lori (@lj3000) & I discussed how running & sex are similar. Here’s to you finding your happy place… and/or finding someone else’s.

1. Some people like to do it alone, but it’s really more fun when you do it with others.
2. It’s a great cardio workout.
3. Screaming passionate positive feedback at participants is encouraged and much appreciated.
4. Correct lubrication is key. Chaffing is not cool.
5. If you don’t do it enough, you get bitchy… (well, we do!)
6. If you’re not wet when you finish, you clearly did not work hard enough (or enjoy it… or you did it in Arizona).
7. If you’re not that into it, maybe you should choose another sport… or “running” partner.
8. It gives you a great high. After a good, loooooong run, it may be difficult to think clearly.
9. It’s better done sober. After all, you do want to remember your “races.”
10. It’s hard. Hehe. :)

And of course, it goes without saying, it’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon.

Anything we missed? Write it in the comments!

LBM 2010: A reminder that you don’t mess with 26.2

Posted on Oct 17, 2010 in Running, Sports, Writer Bunny

Today I ran my third full marathon, and it was my worst yet. Nothing went terribly amiss, but I did miss my time goal by over 30 mins, and yes, I know, I know… “at least I finished.”

But I didn’t spend the past 4 months training to finish. I trained to break 5 hrs (with time to spare if anything went wrong).

Got Hills? LA Marathon = not flat, fast, or all downhill!

Posted on Mar 24, 2010 in Running, Sports, Writer Bunny

The LA Marathon course was rumored to be a fast, flat course that was (dare I say) pretty much all downhill. For those of us who were out there Sunday morning can easily attest, the majority of the course was neither flat nor downhill. After missing our time goals by 5-10 minutes, Lori (@lj3000) & I started researching the course. (For us, I think this is how we cope with our slight disappointment.)

Here is a rough course elevation comparison map for 2009 Honolulu Marathon, 2010 LA Marathon, & 2010 San Diego Rock ‘N Roll Marathon (& Half)… all on the same scale (for comparison sake):

HNL, LAM, SDRNR

The top line (black & pixely) is this year’s Los Angeles Marathon.  The bold red line at the bottom is 2009′s Honolulu Marathon.  And the turquoise, yellow, & magenta lines are the San Diego Rock ‘N Roll Half & Full Marathons, as defined on the graph.

Note: Seriously, my apologies for the unpolished-ness of this graph.  I was really excited to see how the courses compared with each other, so I cranked it out quickly last night before passing out.  Planning on polishing it up soon. And also adding Long Beach & Boston… y’know, just for kicks!  Follow me @cowhateration to stay updated!

LA Marathon Training Plan

Posted on Jan 17, 2010 in Running, Sports

Wow, it’s so nice to be back! My site has been down for the past 2 days, and I actually had something to share! Go figure, right?

So yesterday, I officially started panicking as I just realized that the LA Marathon is coming up in only 9 weeks (and Surf City Half is coming up in 3)! Here I am, tip-toe-ing back into my running routine, when I really should be jumping in head first!

Running is My New Miracle Drug

Posted on Jan 6, 2010 in Running, Sports, Writer Bunny

Took my first post-marathon run today. Though it took some gentle convincing from some tweeps, it felt really great to get back outside & on the road (luckily for me, SoCal weather ain’t too shabby — even in January!)

Hawaii-bound!

12.11.2009: Headed to Hawaii today
So wow… time really has flown.  Just like that, and I’m already heading into race weekend!  I’ve been so busy recently that it hasn’t really hit me yet… but it’s starting to.
Between a random tweet and an email my mom got, I realized even more the importance of the fundraising we do through Team in Training (TNT).  One day, I checked my Twitter, and saw a tweet from a user named JSPepper that said, “RT @iizLiz: Any other part-Asians out there? Bone Marrow Registry: my co-worker losing hope http://www.teamkrissy.com, pls RT.”  I immediately thought of Krissy Kobata, our TNT honored teammate and clicked on the link.  Sure enough, it was her!
Then last night, my mom was sitting at the computer and she kept saying “oh… interesting.  oh my god.” I asked her what was wrong and she said “there’s this girl…” and with out thinking, I said, “Is her name Krissy?”  My mom looked at me like I was crazy, because it was, indeed, her again!  She had received an email from one of her friends looking for a bone marrow match for Krissy.  My mom was pretty puzzled as to how I knew this seemingly random woman, but I explained how Krissy was a TNT honored Teammate & told her a bit about her story.
So the purpose of TNT has definitely hit me… but the actual running itself… ehhhhh, not so much *yet*!  But I’m sure as soon as I have a moment to sit and be still, I’ll finally realize the truth of the matter… I really have lost it!
But the good thing is that I’ve found a support group (called TNT) of kids who have all lost it too… and through their constant guidance, they’ve given me everything I will need to complete my first marathon.
I’ve been working with my coaches to figure out ways around my injuries and how to get me to the finish line.  I’m not 100% sure I can do this, but I trust them, so if they have confidence in me, I’m sure I can muster up a bit of confidence somewhere.
I won’t be able to update this page while I’m in Hawaii, but I will try to update my personal website (http://www.candicemyee.com) as much as I can.
Thank you all for your support… it means the world to me!
