Review: Sunset Bar and Grill

Last night, my bf and I headed down to Hollywood for one of our favorite ways to chill and unwind from the week: dinner and Crashbar improv! The short, congested drive over the hill always makes for some interesting people & tourist watching (highlights including a Mexican Superman and a pinata in the back of an undercover cop car).

We usually go to Pink Pepper Thai, but this time, we opted for a change. A few weeks ago, before meeting friends for dinner at the Fabiolous Cafe, we caught a quick drink and the Laker game at the Sunset Bar and Grill. Even though we only stopped in for a drink, the aromas emanating from the dishes being paraded out of the kitchen to other patrons convinced us that we would have to pay Sunset Bar and Grill another visit.

And so we did. Sunset Bar and Grill is just your basic, neighborhood bar outfitted with a full bar, indoor and outdoor seating, and plenty of televisions so you’ll always have a good view of the game. The staff are fun and friendly, adding to the neighborly feel of the restaurant.

The menu consists of typical bar food as well as salads, sandwiches, pasta, and kabobs. We shared a kabob combo plate mostly because I wanted to try their kabobs and I couldn’t decide which kind to try. The chicken, beef, and shrimp (one skewer of each) kabobs came with a side of rice, steamed vegetables, pita bread, and some sort of teriyaki-ish sauce. We asked that our kabobs we cooked medium and they were cooked perfectly! The meat was tender and moist, and as my bf put it, “they cooked it at the right temperature; if they had cooked the chicken just 2 minutes less, it would’ve been undercooked.” (Sorry for the lack of a picture. We had already devoured a quarter of the plate before I even thought of taking my camera out. Will have to update with pics later.)

Since we frequently bring our own wine to dinner, I called ahead to see what the corkage was, and frankly, it didn’t sound like the restaurant was accustomed to charging corkage. Nonetheless, the corkage they told me (aka the corkage they probably made up on the spot) was only $5. Considering that just down Sunset, restaurants (Cafe Fabiolous, the Bowery, Magnolia) charge $15 corkage, it was definitely a steal!

Even though we didn’t drink much from the bar, the selection looked impressive, but not excessive. According to my bf, they had a selection of pretty good beers on tap, and I thought their beer samplers sounded like fun (esp since I’m not a beer fan yet…). Also, for the martini drinkers out there, $8 martinis! I love martinis, but I’m really not a fan of the $12-$15 martinis.

Check out Sunset Bar and Grill at 6099 West Sunset Blvd (corner of Sunset and Gower; located upstairs, above Roscoe’s) (map); (323) 466-0695
